Course

English Language Learning - Advanced

Ended Feb 25, 2016

Full course description

The advanced course expands upon English language skills learned previously in the beginner and intermediate courses. Students must be capable of evaluating and correcting both written and conversational English prior to enrollment in this course. In the advanced course, students learn to analyze English language media and respond appropriately. Students communicate with a native English language speaking professor. Advanced English language students complete a variety of English Language Thinking (ELT) assignments, which move the learner from knowledge of the English language to critical thinking and problem solving. By the completion of the course, students should be capable of producing both written and conversational English that is comparable with the communication and written work deemed acceptable at a traditional university or an entry-level job in the United States.

VIP Student Services provides English Language Learning courses that give students broad exposure to the English language. All courses incorporate skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in accordance with Hymes’ communicative approach to language learning. Through exposure to various types of media, including authentic texts and conversation, students are provided with meaningful language learning opportunities to develop English language skills. While each class focuses on different abilities and levels of study, all classes work toward a common goal of communicative competence using the English language. Communicative competence means the student not only understands correct usage of the English language, but also the appropriate usage, which is critical in academic, professional, and social situations. VIP Student Services utilizes English Language Thinking (ELT) assignments, which move the learner from knowledge acquisition to critical thinking and problem solving.
