Course

English Language Learning - Intermediate

Ended Feb 25, 2016

Full course description

The intermediate course expands upon English language skills introduced in the beginner level English course. Identification of common mistakes in written and conversational English are emphasized. Students communicate with a native English language speaking professor using knowledge from the beginner course with near-perfection. Students develop the skill of evaluating their own work and the work of their peers.  A variety of English Language Thinking (ELT) assignments are utilized to move the learner from knowledge of the English language to critical thinking and problem solving. VIP Student Services provides English Language Learning courses that give students broad exposure to the English language. All courses incorporate skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in accordance with Hymes’ communicative approach to language learning. Through exposure to various types of media, including authentic texts and conversation, students are provided with meaningful language learning opportunities to develop English language skills. While each class focuses on different abilities and levels of study, all classes work toward a common goal of communicative competence using the English language. Communicative competence means the student not only understands correct usage of the English language, but also the appropriate usage, which is critical in academic, professional, and social situations. VIP Student Services utilizes English Language Thinking (ELT) assignments, which move the learner from knowledge acquisition to critical thinking and problem solving.
